Empowering Health in Rwenzori

After months of heavy rainfall, the Mubuku River and Nyamwamba River broke their banks and severe flooding swept through the Maliba Village in 2016, damaging houses and crops, displacing families, and causing severe injuries and even death. In the aftermath of the floods, 3 passionate community members, one of which had a medical background, joined together and embarked on a mission to provide medical aid to families and community members impacted by the disaster.

Equipped with a travel bag carrying a limited supply of over-the-counter drugs, the small team traveled from home to home and administered treatment based on patients’ clinical symptoms, without the aid of laboratory tests. As the number of patients grew and demand for services intensified, the small team transitioned into opening a small drug store in the Maliba Village. They continued to travel from one home to another, seeking out those in dire need of medical care.

Recognizing the long distances rural residents had to travel to access health services, the founders felt it was imperative to bring medical care directly to the people of Kasese. The small team persevered with their strong desire to help those most vulnerable, and founded Rwenzori Health Clinic. Finally, in 2018, they secured a house to rent where we currently operate our healthcare services with up-to-date facilities.
